80 questions.
Six dimensions.
Nine archetypes.

The Waʻa Within™ is the personality and motivation assessment at the foundation of The Creek & Paddle System™. It measures six dimensions of how you are wired — not your preferences or values, but the behavioral architecture underneath them. The water the canoe floats on.

Six Dimensions The Architecture Underneath Behavior

Each dimension has three zones. Your score in each zone is a continuous measure, not a category. Two people in the same zone can have meaningfully different profiles based on where they land within it. The six dimensions together produce your composite score and your archetype.

WHO you are
The Keel™
Personality bedrock. Your openness to new information, new environments, and new ways of solving old problems. The water the canoe floats on — generates all layers above.
Three Zones
Open Sea 3.5–5.0
Toward novelty, complexity, forward motion. Thinks faster in new terrain than familiar territory.
The Channel 2.5–3.4
Balanced between structure and openness. Adapts when needed, grounds when it matters.
Shoreline 1.0–2.4
Anchored in the proven, the known, the established. Reliability and precision over novelty.
WHAT drives you
The Wind™
Motivational drive. Not how hard you work — the direction your motivational system runs. The orientation underneath effort that determines what gets you moving and what keeps you there.
Three Zones
Headwind 3.5–5.0
Toward-dominant. Pulled by the prize, the goal, the next challenge. Self-propelled forward motion.
Variable Wind 2.5–3.4
Dual-engine. Both toward and away-from active simultaneously. The rarest and most powerful configuration.
Tailwind 1.0–2.4
Away-from dominant. Pushed by the unacceptable outcome, the commitment refused to break. Motivational endurance.
HOW you initiate
The Draw™
Action signature. Your natural pace of initiation — how quickly you move from observation to action. Not boldness or recklessness, but the timing of your first stroke.
Three Zones
First Draw 3.5–5.0
Moves first. Initiates before others have finished deciding. First contact, first offer, first step.
Calibrated Draw 2.5–3.4
Reads, then moves. Enough information to act, not so much that action gets delayed indefinitely.
Full Set 1.0–2.4
Moves when ready. Complete picture before first stroke. Deliberate, thorough, precise.
HOW you respond under pressure
The Squall™
Stress response. What you do automatically when the conversation becomes difficult, the stakes get real, and the comfortable path closes. Not what you do at your best — what you do when pressure tests what you’re made of.
Three Zones
Paddle Harder 3.5–5.0
Fight-forward. Moves toward pressure. Increases output, intensity, pace. The instinct fires before the rational mind finishes assessing.
Mixed Pattern 2.5–3.4
Context-responsive. Reads the specific nature of the pressure before responding. More sophisticated, more demanding.
Brace 1.0–2.4
Hold-and-assess. First move is inward. Protects what matters, assesses the situation, moves when the ground is solid.
HOW you express emotionally
The Tide™
Emotional expression. How much of your inner experience flows naturally into your outer presence. Not sentiment — the natural and immediate translation of what you feel into how you show up.
Three Zones
High Tide 3.5–5.0
Full expression. What you feel shows. Warmth is immediate, real, and consistent. Generates trust and connection as a byproduct of simply being present.
Selective Tide 2.5–3.4
Managed expression. Warm when the relationship warrants it, professional when precision is required. Reads the room before deciding what to offer.
Low Tide 1.0–2.4
Reserved expression. Processes deeply before expressing. Warmth is real but rationed. Consistency and reliability over emotional availability.
HOW you read risk
The Horizon™
Risk threshold. Your natural orientation toward uncertainty, stakes, and the unknown. How far you are willing to sail before you need to see the shoreline.
Three Zones
Open Water 3.5–5.0
High risk appetite. Energized by uncertainty. The further from shore, the more alive. Thrives in ambiguous, high-stakes, uncharted territory.
Calculated Navigator 2.5–3.4
Calibrated risk. Assesses before committing. Will sail out if the picture is clear enough. Neither reckless nor anchored.
The Reef 1.0–2.4
Risk-averse. Prefers proven courses, established processes, known outcomes. Stability and predictability over upside.
Nine Archetypes The Composite Profile

Your six dimension scores combine to place you in one of nine archetypes — the composite behavioral signature that emerges when all six dimensions interact. No archetype is superior. Each carries a distinct ceiling and a distinct shadow. Roughly 35% of profiles carry a primary and a secondary archetype simultaneously.

Composite 3.8+ · Tide ≤3.2
The Tide Turner™
Most common high-performing profile in the Creek & Paddle dataset. Five dimensions at ceiling. One held deliberately in reserve. Ceiling drive, strategic warmth, open water eyes.
All dims ≥3.8 · Tide ≥3.5
The Open Water™
Every dimension at ceiling simultaneously. Pure drive, pure risk, full expression. No internal brake. The person who seems to generate momentum simply by being present.
Keel 4+ · Horizon 4+ · Squall ≤3.0
The Hōkūleʻa™
Finds the route no one else saw. Navigates by stars, instinct, and deep pattern recognition. Vision before the map exists. Requires execution partnership.
Wind 3.8+ · Squall 3.8+ · Draw ≤3.0
The Waʻa Loa™
Built for distance, not speed. Strategic, controlled, reads the current three moves ahead while revealing nothing. Sustains drive quietly.
Tide 4.0+ · Squall ≤2.5
The Kōkua™
Gives of themselves so the crew can go further. Moves toward the need before it is asked for. The most quietly essential archetype — and the most consistently exploited.
Draw ≤2.5 · Composite 2.8–3.8
The Navigator™
Reads the water before entering it. Deliberate, strategic, complete before committed. Most underestimated archetype in the system. Produces decisions that hold.
All dims 2.5–3.8 · Composite 2.8–3.5
The Paddler™
Shows up, does the work, keeps the rhythm. The reliable engine of any crew. Most coachable profile — no dimension is locked, every dimension is developable.
Composite 2.0–2.8 · No dim ≥3.8
The Outrigger™
Stabilizes everything around them. Invisible until absent. Reliable so consistently it becomes expected rather than recognized.
Composite ≤2.2 · Horizon ≤1.5
The Anchor™
Holds the crew steady when the water gets rough. Calm, deliberate, the last to panic. Most abruptly valued when they leave.
